What is the last piece of the jigsaw for Shanghai to become a global technology & innovation hub? Tongji University plays a key role in China International Industry Fair, which is held in Shanghai each year. But how could we further enhance our innovation and creative abilities? These are the first questions posed by Mr. Wu Zhiqiang, vice president of Tongji University.
At the beginning of this year, Chinese Academy of Engineering and Shanghai Municipality jointly planned to open the “International Forum on Innovation and Emerging Industries Development (IEID)” on the basis of Pujiang Innovation Forum to join up such sectors as Information Technology & Industry, Biotechnology & Industry, Cutting-Edge Equipment And New Material Technology & Industry, Green and Low-Carbon Technology & Industry, and Digitalized Creative Technology & Industry in a bid to make this new forum a “weather vane of emerging industries in the world”, according to the disclosure by Wu Zhiqiang.
As part of the new forum, the Digitalized Creative Technology & Industry session will be staged at Tongji University. “… Zhong Zhihua, then secretary-general of Chinese Academy of Engineering, exhorted me to make meticulous preparations for this event. Two months ago, Mr. Zhong Zhihua ran into me and asked how the issue had been implemented and whether some difficulties existed. At the start of this new semester, Mr. Zhong was appointed president of our university. Naturally I now take charge of the preparatory work under his direct leadership,” said Wu Zhiqiang.
According to Wu Zhiqiang, in the past decade, the good development momentum of College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University and rapid growth of the design industry cluster surrounding Tongji University made northeastern Shanghai a bright spot for the design and creative industry in China and even the world. The staging of Digitalized Creative Technology & Industry session at Tongji University is the recognition of our past work and is also a spur to our future work. He said, “… we should use this forum as a link and platform to invite creative heavyweights from around the world. This time we are lucky enough to invite 7 international guests and 3 domestic guests to share with us the latest global trends on creative design and the latest creative achievements in various countries at the upcoming forum.”
Relevant colleges including College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University are now striding towards internationalization, and we are required to attract the participation of more colleges including College of Life Sciences and Technology, College of Ocean and Earth Science, College of Materials Science and Engineering, College of Electronics and Information Engineering and College of Environmental Science and Engineering. Marvelous chemical changes will surely happen if digital, design and creative elements are added to their disciplines. Moreover, the future of digitalized creativity is in the hands of young people. Therefore, the forum will include communication between graduate students and those creative minds with international influence. Wu Zhiqiang was even wondering what kind of fantastic changes will occur to our creative teaching, research and design if those masters are arranged to visit Tongji University each year.
Wu Zhiqiang also expressed his special thanks for Chinese Academy of Engineering and Shanghai Municipality and stated that this showed “their preferences for Tongji University”. He was quoted as saying, “… we must seize this unprecedented opportunity to take Tongji’s related disciplines to new highs and build our university as a strategic center for international ‘digital innovation’ as soon as possible.”
According to Wu Zhiqiang’s disclosure, in order to put such idea into practice, we will do two warm-up activities, including the preparation meeting for Digitalized Creative Technology & Industry session to be held on October 14, which will include two themed meetings namely “digital city and intelligent construction seminar” and “academician report meeting on smart city construction” to spread digitalized creative knowledge to teachers and students.
“Another important role on this platform is students”, reiterated Wu Zhiqiang. Our innovative and creative activities will not have sustainable impetus unless more students participate in interaction and students from many more disciplines are involved in this platform to have zero-distance contact with those great masters. Wu Zhiqiang emphatically said, “… students are the future of digitalized creative technology and industry.”
